Under the objective of promoting and improving open access to the results of research production at universities and research centers in Catalonia, PRC monitors its degree of assimilation through an indicator that can be consulted globally, by institution and by year.

The indicator of open and closed access publications aims at measuring the degree of open access publications available in PRC and contribute, as far as possible, to the promotion of this good practice. The methodology to calculate the percentage of publications in open and closed access in PRC is as follows:

  • From the total number of publications (articles, books, chapters, or parts of books) and theses in PRC, those having a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) are extracted.
  • From this subset on, if the locator is a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), Unpaywall starts running. This tool indexes all the full text publications in OA.
  • If there is no DOI, those publications that have a domain validated by the Research Support Working Group as open access are identified.

By visiting Open Access Observatory, it is possible to find out the state of OA in Catalan universities, where data is published individually and aggregated from 2011 until 2022. From 2023 onwards, the Observatory uses data extracted from Openalex from the ROR (Research Organization Registry) of each university.

Observatory’s data complement data retrieved by the OA Indicator from PRC to make further progress in OA publication.
