To monitor open access in the scientific output of Catalan universities and research centers, the Portal de la Recerca de Catalunya (PRC) is used to track progress through an indicator that can be consulted globally and by institution and year, following the model of other European initiatives (such as Denmark, The Netherlands, Ireland, and the United Kingdom).

The open and closed access publications indicator aims to measure the degree of open access for the publications listed in the PRC and, where possible, to promote this good practice. The methodology for calculating the percentage of open and closed access publications in the PRC is as follows:

  • From the total number of publications (articles, books, book chapters/sections) and theses in the PRC, those with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) are extracted.
  • Within this subset, if the URL is a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), a query is made to OpenAlex to identify publications with the full text available in open access.
  • For the remainder without a DOI, publications are identified as open access if their domain is validated as open access by the Research Support Working Group.

You can also find out the state of open access in Catalan universities through the Open Access Observatory, where data is published individually and aggregated from 2011 to 2022. From 2023 , data extracted from OpenAlex from each university’s ROR is used.
